Understanding Cat Body Language
Cats communicate constantly — through their tails, ears, eyes, and posture. Once you learn to read these signals, your relationship with your cat will transform.
The Tail
- Tail straight up = Happy, confident, friendly greeting
- Tail puffed up = Scared or agitated — give space
- Tail wrapped around you = Affection and trust
- Tail low or tucked = Anxious or submissive
- Slow tail swish = Focused or mildly irritated
The Eyes
- Slow blink = The ultimate sign of trust. Slow blink back to say "I love you too"
- Dilated pupils = Excitement, fear, or overstimulation
- Half-closed eyes = Relaxed and content
- Direct hard stare = A challenge or threat (between cats)
The Ears
- Forward and upright = Alert and interested
- Rotated back = Mildly annoyed
- Flattened against head = Frightened or aggressive — back off
The Body
- Belly exposed = Trust — but not always an invitation to touch!
- Arched back, fur raised = Defensive or scared
- Kneading ("making biscuits") = Comfort and contentment, rooted in kittenhood
- Head bunting = Marking you with their scent — a huge compliment
When to Give Space
If your cat's ears go back, their tail swishes sharply, or their skin ripples — stop what you're doing. These are clear signals that they've had enough. Respecting these boundaries builds deeper trust over time.
